Concrete, Decks, Fencing and Landscaping

RCL Contracting is a Hastings-based crew that does the outside of your place properly - driveways, patios, slabs and foundations, timber decks, fencing, and the landscaping that ties it all together. Residential and commercial, from Hawke's Bay down to the Kāpiti Coast.

About us

Outdoor areas you will still be happy with in ten years

We are a dedicated team that helps you enjoy your outdoor areas for years to come. That is the whole idea: the driveway, the deck, the fence and the garden are the parts of a house you use every single day, and they are the parts most people put up with rather than enjoy. We would rather build them so you do not have to think about them again.

Most of what we do is concrete - driveways, footpaths, patios, foundations, and the slabs and hardstands on commercial sites - and the rest is what goes around it. Because the same crew does the ground prep, the boxing, the pour, the fence and the retaining wall, the pieces line up and nobody is waiting on somebody else to turn up.

  • The prep is where the job is won. Compaction, drainage and the base under the slab decide whether it is still flat and uncracked in a decade. We do not skip that part to get to the part you can see.
  • You get told what it actually needs. If the cheaper option will do the job, we will say so. If it will not, we will say that too.
  • One crew, start to finish. Concrete, decks, fencing and landscaping done by the same people, so a whole backyard is one job rather than four.

More about RCL Contracting

Power-floating a fresh slab. The finish happens in the hour after the pour, and there is no going back to fix it later.

A Few Jobs in Motion

Short clips from the client's own Facebook page - the crew at work rather than a stock reel.

A wood grain composite slat fence line going in along a driveway entrance - posts set, with the sponge-finish driveway to follow.
A regional council project: reinforcing laid under a timber pole structure, ready for the pour.
A large commercial slab going in between precast panel walls. No job too big.
A side path taking shape between the fence and the house - two strips poured, the middle boxed for next.
Where we work

Hawke's Bay to the Kāpiti Coast

We are based in Hastings and work right through Hawke's Bay, down through the Manawatū and Horowhenua to Waikanae and the Kāpiti Coast. If you are somewhere in between, ring and ask - the answer is usually yes.

Hastings

Home base. Hastings and the settlements around it - Havelock North, Flaxmere, Clive and out into the Heretaunga Plains - are a short run rather than a call-out, which is what makes a small job worth doing and a big one easy to keep an eye on.

Napier

Twenty minutes up the expressway. Older housing stock on the hill and in Marewa, and newer subdivisions out towards Taradale and Bay View - which means everything from replacing a cracked 1960s driveway to pouring the first slab on a bare section.

Hawke's Bay

The wider region, from the coast through the plains to the foothills. Free-draining gravels in a lot of it, heavy clay in some of it, and the ground prep is what decides whether concrete lasts - so we look at the site before we price the slab.

Palmerston North

The city end of the Manawatū and a regular run for us. Bigger sections than the coast, a lot of established homes wanting decks and fencing renewed, and commercial yards that need a slab that will take trucks.

Levin

Horowhenua, on the road between the Manawatū and the coast. Lifestyle blocks and town sections both, and the sort of job where a driveway, a fence and a garden all get done in one visit rather than three.

Waikanae and the Kāpiti Coast

The southern end of the patch. Sandy coastal ground that needs compacting properly before anything is poured on it, and outdoor living areas that get used year round, so they are worth doing well.

Questions

Common Questions

What areas do you cover?

We are based in Hastings and work throughout Hawke's Bay - Napier, Havelock North, Flaxmere, Clive and the plains - and down through the Manawatū and Horowhenua to Palmerston North, Levin, Waikanae and the Kāpiti Coast. If you are somewhere in between, ring and ask.

Do you do small jobs, or only big ones?

Both. A path to the clothesline and a commercial hardstand are both concrete, and we price each on what it takes. Around Hastings and Napier a small job is easy to fit in; further afield it is worth bundling a couple of things together so the travel is worthwhile for everyone.

Can you do the whole backyard - concrete, deck, fence and garden?

Yes, and that is the job we like most. Doing it as one project means the levels, the drainage and the order of work are planned together, and you deal with one crew rather than chasing a concreter, a fencer and a landscaper who each need the other one to finish first.

How do I get a price?

Ring 027 375 7749 or send us an enquiry with roughly what you are after and where the job is. We will come and look at the site, talk through the options and give you a quote. There is no obligation, and if you want to think about it, that is fine.

Why does the ground preparation matter so much?

Because concrete only does what the ground underneath lets it do. A slab poured on a base that has not been compacted, or that holds water, will crack and settle no matter how well the top is finished. The same goes for a fence post or a deck pile that is not set properly. We spend the time on the part you will never see so the part you do see lasts.
